THE DESIGN TRIAD
The Design Triad
Design is never a single act of creation. It is a negotiation between Reality, Utility, and Imagination, between the world as it is, the needs it must serve, and the vision that transforms it. Over time, I’ve realised that every project I undertake, from infrastructure to furniture, moves within this triangle. Context grounds the work in place and time. Purpose gives it function and clarity. Vision brings the human element, interpretation, emotion, and identity.
Around this triad lies the Circle of Constraints: budget, time, law, physics. These boundaries define the designer’s playground, shaping how far imagination can stretch before reality pulls it back.
Design lives in the tension between these forces, a shifting point inside the triangle, always moving, always negotiating.
