Ray Shelf™, the modular shelving system, comprises five supports of various shapes and a plurality of bars. The supports are crafted from steel sheet, which is laser cut and punched, bent, hand welded and powder coated. The bars are formed from extruded aluminium rectangular boxes, powder coated with end cup inserts to either extremity.
Inspired by early experiences of working in a metallurgy factory in Italy, the designer wanted to celebrate the strength of metal; despite its sleek appearance and lightweight design, the Ray Shelf™ is incredibly sturdy. The steel units range in weight from just 1.2kg to 2.1kg depending on shape but have, with careful calculation, been designed to support a 20kg load, while each 1m bar length can bear 5kg more than 14 times its own weight.
